Melisha Linzie is an Oakland native. She is a paraeducator for the Oakland Unified School District, and she has been a member of AFSCME Local 257 since 1991.

She is currently the 1st Vice President of Local 257 and, in her role, she represents five classifications—paraeducators, 504 technicians, licensed vocational nurses (LVNs), food service workers and custodians.

Her union leadership began in 2008 when a former coworker and chief steward witnessed her on several occasions being a voice for the voiceless and providing leadership at the worksite. The coworker encouraged her to get involved in her local's Executive Board. Three months later, she became the local's secretary-treasurer and served in that role for nine years.

She has also served in other leadership roles, working especially hard to decrease the number of jobs being contracted out throughout the school district.

Melisha is a firm believer that change is good. She joined the Council 57 Executive Board so that she could continue to be a labor advocate for all locals, chapters and Council 57 staff.
