Alia Griffing

Alia Griffing, AFSCME Council 57 Political Director
Political Director
(916) 923-1860 x112

Alia joined Council 57 in February 2018 after working for AFSCME Council 28 in Washington State for 10 years—first as a lobbyist, then most recently as the Research & Public Policy Director.

Alia grew up in Washington and earned her bachelors’ degree (University of Washington— political science with society & justice minor) and juris doctorate (Gonzaga University) in her home state.

Not coming from a union family herself, Alia’s first real exposure to labor was when she started in the Lobbyist position with Council 28 in 2007. She has found the work to be incredibly rewarding—her favorite aspect is connecting members to the political and legislative processes, and witnessing the feelings of empowerment that stem from advocacy.

While fully embracing the move to California, Alia is a dedicated Seattle Mariners fan, and will continue to root for her M’s.
