Octavia Bazile

We mourn the sad loss of our much beloved Octavia Bazile, who passed away Monday, January 16, 2012. She retired from the Contra Costa County Superior Courts January 2010, but continued doing union work as a both a steward and completed her term as Vice President of AFSCME Local 2700 to October 2011. She started her involvement with AFSCME 2700 as a steward and then became Chief Steward in 1994 when it was a combined position representing both the courts and county. Octavia served as president of AFSCME 2700 for ten years. She served on bargaining teams for both the court and county; was a CBTU (Coalition of Black Trade Unionists) member and delegate to AFSCME Council 57 and the Central Labor Council, as well as a delegate to AFSCME International. She put the members first making sure discounts were affordable and available to theme parks and activities, including an annual picnic and casino bus trips. Her favorite event was planning the annual Day at the Races at Golden Gate Fields. And boy, could she pick those horses.

She actively supported political candidates, getting members to phone bank on “AFSCME Tuesday” and to precinct walk.

She authored and pushed the adoption of the Domestic Violence Policy by Contra Costa County including the Courts. It was hard to believe a 2700 member was fired because she was a victim of domestic violence. OT fought and won the grievance but her fight did not stop there she took this issue all the way to the Board of Supervisors who then adopted her resolution to create a Domestic Violence Policy.

Funeral to be held Friday, January 27, 2012, 11 AM at Second Baptist Church, 1170 Benicia Road, Vallejo, CA 94591 (707-643-6496). A viewing on Thursday, January 26, 2012, 4-7 PM at Wiggins-Knipp Funeral Home 524 Capitol Street, Vallejo, CA 94590 (707-642-4459).

Cards can be sent to Octavia’s daughter Lisa Hill, granddaughters Taylor and Sidney at 36326 Tunbridge Drive, Newark CA 94560.

Octavia’s concern extended to helping our members through difficult personal times therefore we ask for contributions to the Contra Costa County Community Fund, PO Box 389, Martinez CA 94553 that provides help and support for union members in need.
