District Council 57's 4th Annual Leadership Conference

AFSCME Council 57’s fourth annual Leadership Conference was described by many as “the best ever.” Over 150 rank and file officers, board members, stewards, and activists convened in Santa Clara under the conference theme “Building the Union Through Crisis-Emerging Stronger and Smarter Through Troubled Times

Expert presenters from AFSCME International’s Communications, Public Affairs, Research and Political Action departments joined other speakers from UC Berkeley Labor Center, Groundworks consultants and the California Bar. Among the high points of the conference were a presentation on AFSCME’s Main Street Campaign showing AFSCME’s high-energy fightback in many key battleground states across the nation, and panels featuring Council 57 activists and their groundbreaking campaigns within California. This included the effort to defend worker safety (Local 2620-Napa State Hospital,) and the fight to protect contracts and collective bargaining rights (Local 955-City of Pleasanton; Local 101-City of San Jose.) Conference participants enjoyed workshops on the use of Social Media, Community Connections, Creative Campaign Tactics and more.

Participants took to the streets during the Friday evening commute hour, chanting and dropping a banner over Highway 101 in support of the City of San Jose chapter’s current battle over the Mayor’s attack on their pensions, wages and collective bargaining rights. Another new conference feature was a Labor Trivia Contest entered by teams and individual Conference participants.  Here is a link to the new contest that closes Friday, January 6, 2012.
