Charlene Shores
(Local 829)

Charlene Shores has served as Local 829 President in San Mateo County for over fifteen years. For most of that time she has served as Council 57 Treasurer. She is a Shelter Care Counselor at the county Receiving Home, working with abused teenagers who have been removed from their homes.

Charlene's main interest in union activity is political action, especially in the area of worker benefits. She has worked tirelessly to achieve better status for domestic partners of county workers in the area of health care and survivorship benefits, but also in expanding categories of appropriate use of sick and bereavement leave. During election
season, Charlene is rarely seen without a clipboard with voter registration forms and a stack of PEOPLE deduction cards. Her other political activity is as President of the Gay and Lesbian Organization for Betterment and Equality (GLOBE), a network of four hundred activists in Alameda County.

Mel Thornhill
(Local 2703)

Mel has worked for the Mercy Medical Center for 21 years as a Facilities Engineer. In short, he fixes things. He served on the negotiating team for the hospital and is on his second term as Mercy Medical Center Chapter President for Local 2703. Mel is also on Local 2703's Executive Board. He is interested in more training and communication between the members and leadership as defined by the 21st Century initiative.

 

 

Jean Hamilton
(Local 3993)

Jean E. Hamilton is the President of Local 3993, San Francisco Bay Area Rapid Transit District Professional and Supervisory Association. When she's not busy handling Union concerns her "other" job is that of principal financial analyst overseeing the Automatic Fare Collection Capital Group, and project administration lead for the Oakland Airport Connector Project. She is also a member of the BART Investment Plans Committee, overseeing close to $700 million in retirement investments.
Before working for the District Jean was an elementary and secondary school teacher, a cost engineer and scheduler for several international engineering and construction firms, and an economic analyst at a local Bay Area refinery. Jean is a graduate of the University of California at Davis, with post-graduate certifications from California State University at Hayward.
Jean's goal as a member of the Council 57 Executive Board is to facilitate a steady flow of information between the Council and her Local. She's also very interested in gaining skills that can assist her local in negotiations and representation.


John Vance

Local 10)

John Vance was recently elected to be President of AFSCME Local 10 which is based in Modesto. John is a Public Works Inspector for the City of Patterson, and has been the Steward representing city workers for several years.

In running for Local 10 President, his priority was to make changes to bring the local into the 21st century. John wants to motivate members to be more involved in the Union, and to address issues that affect their workplace and working conditions. He demands open communication and fairness to all members.


Amy Young
(Local 829)


Amy Young is a member of Local 829 in San Mateo County, and President of the Sequoia Hospital Chapter within the Local. In her twelve years as Chapter President, Amy has handled countless grievances and served on numerous bargaining teams. She is a master in signing members up for PEOPLE dues deduction.

Amy is a Psyolysomnograph Technologist at Sequoia's Sleep Disorder Lab. When she is not organizing for the union or at work in the lab, she coaches kids and adults in basketball and volleyball.
